1. Where do you currently visit? Ephrata Ma=

Where ever Karen G. needs somebody in a pinch! In the past, we've
done reading programs at two schools, Manor Care and Abraxas,
Morgantown
2. How many pets do you have? eight<=

3. What are their breeds/ages/names?=
Fancy is a
black lab retired breeding do for Susquehanna Service Dogs and is=
12
yrs old. The rest are all Cavalier king Charles
Spaniels. Heather is 15, Kelly-4, Roonie-1 My KPETS dogs are=
Sally-8,
Sunny-4, Caper-6 and Hanna-six months. AND the three
puppies left from Caper's litter who are three months old.=

4. Special trick, talent or skill your KPETS pet h=
as? All three =
do
agility and Rally in their spare time. Sally has many tricks...
Chasing her tail, playing a toy piano, waving goodbye and High
Five. Caper will work for anyone, as long as they have food!
Sunny, well, Sunny is the clown of the bunch. Her most entertaini=
ng
"trick" was eating over a dozen cicadas while on a walk
during visit at Abraxas. The boys thought it was hysterical. (She
didn't even get sick!)
5. How long have you been a KPETS team? About 3
years. Sally and I were Delta before that.<=

6. What's =
your
KPETS pet's favorite past time? Sally and
Sunny love doing agility, Caper's favorite pastime would have to =
be
looking for food!
7. What's your favorite part of being a KPETS
team?
Being able to make someone's day a little better by
sharing my dogs with them.
8. What recent KPETS events have you participated
in?
I run pre-assessment once a month and do on-site e=
vals
of new teams. Lately I've been spending a lot of time "in the
background", helping with the planning of KPETS K-9 Karnival=
.
9. If you could trade places with your pet for a d=
ay,
what would you enjoy most about being him or her?<=
/span>
Getting to sleep for as long as I wanted! &nbs=
p;
10. If you were a dog/cat breed, which would you be
and why? I'd probably be a Collie (or some other herding br=
eed)
because I tend to worry about everything, don't like feeling out =
of
control in situations and I can easily get "caught up in the
details". That's probably why I love my cavaliers so m=
uch,
they are the most happy-go-lucky dogs I know and they make me take
life a bit less seriously.

WHAT A WONDERFUL WAY TO EXPLAIN IT...
A sick man turned to his doctor as he was preparin=

KPETS visit to the YTI Volunteer Fair =
&n=

Last year, approximately ten non-profits present=
ed
their missions in an afternoon program for the staff at YTI (Yo=
rk
Technical Institute). Karen and Podley-or I should say Podley-w=
as
the hit that day. That boy worked the crowd as he usually did, =
just
by being there. The YTI staff then met and voted on how
to split the funds between these organizations. Last =
year
KPETS received a generous portion of those funds.
But THIS year was different. This year they had a Volunteer Fai=
r.
The organizations staffed informational booths over lunch and
dinner so staff AND students could find out more about each
organization. This way they could talk one-on-one with
representatives from each organization and find out about volun=
teer
opportunities that may interest them.
The lunch shift was covered by Karen Gerth and Zeke (in-trainin=
g).
As any young golden would be, he was elated with all the attent=
ion
that he got. But by hour number two, they had to come TO =
him.
And the last half hour, he pretty much slept through all the
petting. But you know, I think he's getting lessons from Pod in
heaven, because I've never had such a well-behaved puppy.
The dinner shift was staffed by Nancy Houston and professional
therapy dog Gilly! Gilly and Nancy do KPETS proud when out repr=
esenting
us.
The staff and students who liked dogs were sure to visit the KP=
ETS
table before venturing off to the others booths. Some stayed wi=
th
the pups the whole time or ventured back a second and third time
before going back to class.
Let's hope we recruited some new volunteers and made a good
impression come fund-splitting time!

"Spring Splash"

"Spring Splash" was held April 24th in
Palmyra as part of their 250th Anniversary celebration. The wea=
ther
was wonderful for the event!! Dock Dogs were present and very
entertaining. It was amazing to watch the abilities of some of =
the
dogs. They were pure grace and strength in motion! Rumor has it
that this event may be held again next year!!
KPETS had a booth manned by Gini Swartzell, Joellen Meyer, Patt=
iJo
Hibschman, Sylvia Miller, Heather Meaney, Nan Handshaw-Roberts,=
and
Sue Schreffler. Our beautiful and charming canine
representatives were very well-received and enjoyed by everyone=
!!
Hopefully we made new friends and piqued the interest of a few =
to
become involved in KPETS!!

Sammy Gerth (Karen's golden) and Bea Wainer
(new volunteer Deb Wainer's yellow lab) participated in the Doc=
k Dogs
event. Bea did an awesome job jumping 16 feet. Sammy was a bit =
off
from last year's 11 foot jumps. This year the boy came in secon=
d to
last jumping four feet on his first jump and TWO on his final j=
ump.
Looks like the water may have been a bit too cold this
year. Last place winner may have been the smartest in
the bunch - he didn't even get wet!

Nottingham
Country Day School Visit

On April 14th at 4:30 in the afternoon, Indy and I visited the
Nottingham Country Day School in Nottingham, PA along with Vale=
rie
Freese with her dog Eddy. The school is located near the
Herr's Potato Chip Factory.
We were taken around the facility by their Director, Kathy.&nbs=
p;We
started with the toddlers, worked our way up through the presch=
ool
age children and ended with the school age children who are at =
the
facility for after school care.
We spoke a little about who and why we visit and the Director t=
ook
the opportunity to teach good dog skills with the children (ex:
always ask permission before approaching someone's dog). T=
he
children enjoyed comparing the differences in Eddy and Indy's s=
ize,
color, fur and tail length.
Both dogs enjoyed being petted, hugged and admired by the child=
ren
and staff.

KPETS visit to the students at <=
/span>Lebanon Valley College

On Wednesday, April 21st, Lebanon Valley College
hosted for the first time, their version of "Cookies and
Canines". The event was sponsored by a new group on
campus called Active Minds, whose purpose is to promote wellness
and de-stress events for the student body. So, what could=
be
better for de-stressing than our KPETS furry friends? Leah
Mauro, Area Coordinator for Residential Life and Active Minds
advisor, also helped to make this special night possible, along
with Kathleen Gallagher, Director of Counseling. The ther=
apy
dogs and handlers assembled at 6:00 on the student quad on
campus. There was an impressive showing of nine terrific
teams, so we had dogs of all sizes and breeds.
The evening was clear and cool as we waited to see what the res=
ponse
would be from the LVC students. In less than a wag of a d=
og's
tail, young men and women seemed to come from everywhere.
Suddenly the quad was filled with students ooo-ing and ahh-ing =
and
petting the dogs. There were so many smiles and tails wagging, =
it
was difficult to guess who was having the better time. One
thing was certain, everyone agreed the event was an undeniable
success. All the participating dogs gave the event "=
four
paws" for being fun. (If the truth be told, it was
probably for the yummy homemade dog treats they received from t=
he
Active Minds group.)
We heard comments from students such as "I miss my dog at =
home
so much" or "we have a dog just like this at
home." One young woman said that she was allergic to
dogs so her family never had one. However, she loved dogs=
so
much and this event gave her the chance to pet them. Alth=
ough
she'd have to wash her hands and not touch her face, it didn't
deter her from petting the dogs with great enthusiasm. On=
ce
again our furry therapy friends did us proud and talk is already
underway for having the dogs back to LVC in the fall for another
evening of de-stressing, fun and yes, perhaps more dog treats.<=

KPETS Presentation to the Lebanon VA Hospital =

KPETS was asked to speak at the Lebanon VA's
annual volunteer in-service on the benefits of pet therapy visi=
ts.
We were included in a day-long list of activities. Laura Whitman
and Reni talked about a few significant experiences we've had o=
ver
the years of doing therapy work. Heather Meaney and her co=
llie
Romeo arrived to help round out the presentation.=

KPETS at Lancaster Bible College's Wellness Fair=

Lancaster Bible College hosted a Health Fair for
their staff and students on April 7. KPETS was invited to have =
an
info booth to share our mission with them as they were on their
lunch breaks. From 11 am to 1 pm, Linda Bunnel and Dawson,=
and
Zeke and I attended this fun event. We even got lunch! Students=
and
staff both stopped by to find out about KPETS and what our prec=
ious
pups can do to help others. It is wonderful to be invited to th=
ese
facilities and organizations, and that they are recognizing the=
value
of what these animals can do in so many settings.

Lancaster
Health Campus invited KPETS to help celebrate:
"Ta=
ke
Your Child To Work"
For the past three years, Lancaster General Heal=
th,
invited KPETS to come in and show the kids what therapy dogs do=
in
a hospital setting during their "Bring Your Child To Work
Day".
Nancy Houston with Gilly, and Sammy and I did a half hour
interactive presentation for the 20+ kids. We asked them what j=
obs
dogs can do and then explained our dogs' jobs. To make it even =
more
fun, we had them split up into two groups to work with Sammy and
Gilly. Each group got to walk Gilly slowly, as if they we=
re
going through a physical therapy session. Then, the swapp=
ed
sides. This time they got to take Sammy for a walk as they rode=
in
a 'wheelchair' (office chair) while being pushed by someone as
Sammy walked along side.
We explained how working on balance and endurance could be
practiced by playing fetch with a dog. Both Sammy and Gilly were
willing to help in this area too.
To wrap up, the boys - Sammy and Gilly - got to show off some of
their unique tricks to impress the kids. I think it was some of=
the
staff's favorite part of the day!

at the Tommy Foundation Autism Walk at Daniel's Den

Julianna Cox (as KIP)
The Autism Walk proved to be an informative, fun,
and successful event! My 12-year-old daughter, Julianna,
looked out onto the sea of participants through the eyes of our=
own
mascot, Kip!
It was a windy walk, but many smiles were shared as Kip's fan c=
lub
followed him around while more uncertain bystanders felt safer
simply giving Kip a high five.
KPETS had the large (my Newfoundland, Bo) and well as the small
(Marilyn Hapke's tiny Gretchen) represented. Both were we=
ll
received among the crowd. Bo's biggest fan that day was a
14-year-old autistic boy. As he contently stroked Bo's th=
ick
black fur and chatted about life with me, his mother and little
sister were near by having fun painting a piece of pottery at o=
ne
of the activity booths. When the mother came back to coll=
ect
her teenage son, she graciously said to me, "See, he did n=
ot
tick the entire time he was petting your dog. All of his
ticks and tension disappeared for just a brief time..."&nb=
sp;
As a tired Kip mascot, geriatric dog, and frozen handler, made =
our
way back to the car that afternoon, I couldn't think of a better
way to spendtwo hours on a Sunday afternoon. And although=
we
were the ones being thanked for making the event, I couldn't he=
lp
but think that it was I who received the greatest gift that day=
