volunteers, only 44 percent documented their volunteer ho=

their hours, we visited over 123 different facilities or
organizations!

April is Volunteer recognition month. KPETS wants to
thank each and every one of our volunteers for all
their efforts throughout the year(s). Many other organizations
have luncheons, or give gifts. But we know most KPETS volunteers wo=
uld
probably rather do something WITH their dogs rather than without. S=
o,
KPETS is holding our Volunteer Recognition Picnic on July 10
at Chickies Rock Park near Columbia.
=
We have the pavilion all day but the program and main
konnection time will be between 11-3. In order to save funds, =
we
ask that everyone bring a dish to share. If your last name sta=
rts
with a letter between A-M, please bring an appetizer/entree dish to
share. If you last name starts with N-Z, please bring a dessert.
Sodas and water and plastic ware will be provided.
=
This will be a great time to get to know other volunteers, mingle w=
ith
our pets and just reward ourselves for a great year serving others!=

our communities! Every month we will be featuring a random
KPETS team, so we can see what others are up to and get to
know one another!

'Volunteer of the Month' for April is:
Nan=

has been a KPETS team since 2006 and has participated in lots of
KPETS activities and a variety of different visits. Here is a
little about Nancy...
1. Where do you currently visit? Acadia
Neurological Rehab, Lancaster Rehab Hospital, Village Vista Nur=
sing
Home, and 3 Hospice patients - 1 at Village Vista and 2 in their
homes.
2. How many pets do you have? How many
are KPETS registered? 2 and both are registered with KPET=
S.
3. What are their breeds/ages/names? Both Go=
lden
Retrievers, Cashel is 7 and MacGillyCuddy is 3 years old.<=
/o:p>
4. Special trick, talent or skill your KPETS pet has?=
Cashel =
and
Gilly both bring in the newspaper every day.They do a little
dancing-weaves between my legs and fly, backing up under my leg=
s.
Cashel has two titles,in Novice and Advanced Rally Obedience. He
placed 1st place and two 4th places with scores of 97,87,96 in
Novice Rally. He Placed 3rd , 2nd with scores of 97,97. He had =
an
83 on his third leg and didn't place. You have to have 3 legs (=
dog
show) to receive a title.
Gilly has a title in Novice Rally Obedience scores of 97,94,92.=
He
took 2nd place at all three dog shows. Gilly also has a title in
Advanced Rally. He placed 1st place with a score of 85. He had =
a 96
in the second show but didn't place. The third show he had a
97 and would have placed third but the handler (me) made a erro=
r. I
was putting his leash on and one foot was out side the ring and=
the
Judge took off 10 points. Gilly got his Excellent title this mo=
nth.
He had 1st place twice and 1 second place, with scores of 90,72=
,93.
Gilly goes to work with me. He has two jobs, one is greeter and=
the
second is when the fax machine goes off, he goes to the machine
across the room and brings me the fax.=
5. =
How long have you been a KPETS team?=
4 years=
6. What's your KPETS pet's favorite past time?
They love to go swimming every week in the summer
with their dear friends Sammy and Cinda, and the late Podley, w=
ho
they are going to really miss this summer.
7. What's your favorite part of being a KPETS team?
To know the dogs bring joy into peoples lives, even if it is for
just an hour at a time. Watching the smiles pop out on peoples
faces. Gilly has a 103 year old Hospice Patient. The care taker
said she talks more in that hour with Gilly than she does all w=
eek.
It is neat to see the patients doing AAT and pushing themselves=
to
do more because of the dog.
8. What recent KPETS events have you participated in?=
The
Bon-Ton's Community Days
9. If you could trade places with your pet for a day,
what would you enjoy most about being him or her?
If I was Cashel, I would enjoy sitting on my Dad=
's
lap every night for a couple hours and watching TV. If I was Gi=
lly,
I would enjoy being a happy pup and having everyone greeting me
with a smile and a hug.
10. If you were a dog/cat breed, which would you be and
why? Golden Retriever, because they are sweet, frien=
dly
and everyone loves them.

In honor of April being National Volunteer
Appreciation Month, here are some of the comments of appre=
ciation for
our teams that facilities have shared with us!
I have personally witnessed
visits from KPETS when they visited Lutheran Retirement
Village at Utz Terrace Assisted Living Residence. The handlers =
were
wonderful and the Dogs and Cats were so friendly and socialized=
. A
truly wonderful experience with the residents and staff. <=
br>

KPETS comes to Mennonite Home twice=
a
month and our residents certainly do look forward to seeing the
dogs and their handlers. Some of the KPETS "staff" ha=
ve
made some friends here that they come to visit other than just
KPETS times. The second and fourth Tuesday evenings are
dedicated to KPETS and we try hard not to schedule anything els=
e.
If we do, the residents "go to the dogs " anyway.

children at DVS to all the KPETS volunteers who have visited at=

Shelter. The children really look forward to their
visits. They enjoy petting the dogs, learning about the do=

As the Volunteer Coordinator at
Lancaster Rehabilitation Hospital, I am proud to say we are so =
very
fortunate to have KPETS pet volunteers come to our facility to
visit our patients. Not only are they extremely popular with our
staff, but they appear to bring unlimited amounts of happiness =
to
our patients, by encouraging them to exercise their bodies, the=
ir
minds and their social skills.
My personal observance is that our patients appear to be very
enthusiastic and motivated through their therapy sessions whene=
ver
the therapy pets arrive. It is actually encouraging for me=
to
see our patients walking with renewed determination through the
halls with the therapy pets or just playing catch with a partic=
ular
pet's favorite toy.
A big thanks to KPETS and to the pet owners for all of the valu=
able
time spent in training and preparing these loving selfless cani=
nes
to naturally and instinctively interact with and offer lots of
attention, love, and support to us all.

The KPETS volunteers that visit our school libra=
ry
on a weekly basis to read with the boys and girls are fantastic.
They are reliable, kind to the children, and good-natured. This
being the first year of the READ program here at Nottingham Sch=
ool,
I have been amazed by the boost of confidence shown by students.
Also, the kind smiles that come from the students when interact=
ing
with the dogs are great to see. Students have shown improvement=
in
reading with expression. Being an avid dog fan myself, I also a=
ppreciate
how the handlers teach students about how to handle and take ca=
re
of a dog properly.

learn the way to Acadia and get excited even on the way. =

I wanted=
to
pass this along since I have purchased stuffed toys at garage
sales, etc. when we had puppies. I don't think I'd ever do it
again...
Last night at agility class, a vet, who is a fellow agility stu=
dent
was telling us about a case she had this week. The dog ate a
child's teddy bear and was very sick. When she opened the dog u=
p to
remove what she thought was an intestinal obstruction she found=
a
huge gelatin type mess inside and the dog's intestines were bla=
ck
and the tissue dead. The dog will die, no surgery can fix him,
there was no living intestine left from stomach to colon.
This was not an obstruction...so she called the manufacturer of=
the
Teddy Bear on a quest to find out what the gel was and what kil=
led
the dog. Turns out the stuffing in children's toys contains
ingredients for flame retardants and mite control! It is design=
ed
to become a gel and is highly toxic. Now you would think a chil=
d's
toy would be safe because it is for children, but they don't ex=
pect
a child to eat the stuffing of the toys... hmmm, that seems a b=
it
scary too. But we all know dogs demolish stuffed toys.
S=
o do
not give or buy your dog any children's stuffed animals =
Maybe so=
me
children's toys do not have this ingredient, but better to be s=
afe
then sorry. Please make sure all your dog toys are for dogs. Pl=
ease
pass this on...it is a horrible death she described and one that
can be avoided.
