Keeping Pet Therapy Konnections Konnected!<= /span>

= ;I can't thank all of our volunteers enough for all the time they spend sharing their pets with others - You truly are Touching Lives * Warming Hearts in our communities all across PA (and then some!) God bless you all for your generous offering of your time! As another year has passed, renewal time is fast approaching. Please&n= bsp; be sure to watch your snail mail for your renewal forms coming out = in a few weeks. Then, please, be sure to follow the directions and fill out all necessary forms and return no later than September 10th. 3Ddog

With = much thought, discussion and analysis there will be some changes to the registration fee structure. With insurance rates going up, we have decided not to increase our insurance rates over all, but to have e= ach individual handler's annual fee be $30 for one dog. For each additi= onal dog, for that handler, it will still be an additional $5. This will effect households with two or more adult handlers. As for chil= dren who go along with a parent with one dog, this will not apply. We are hoping this increase will not deter any one from renewing. Again, we are keeping the annual renewal fee at $30 per year. Thank you so much for your understanding. <= /span>

= Another type of membership we are offering is a supporting membership. You all know funding is key for all non-prof= it agencies during these difficult times. So if you have friends or fa= mily members who know how passionate you are about therapy visits, why n= ot ask them to become a supporting member? The fee is only $20 and they will receive our monthly KPETS Keynotes newsletter and be able to s= ee the things that are going on in your organization!

Supporting membership is also available to those who, sadly, have l= ost their furry companion or had to retire them from visiting. By becom= ing a supporting member, you can continue the mission of KPETS, and help others become and continue as KPETS teams serving our communities. =

Facilities that KPETS teams visit have the opportunity to bec= ome supporting facilities. They too will receive our KPETS Keynotes newsletter and a decal to post on their door stating "<= em>Proud Facility Sp= onsor of KPETS - Keystone Pet Enhanced Therapy Services". Depending on the sponsor level, the facility name will be posted and acknowledged on the new sponsor page of the kpets.org website. www.kpets.org/sponsor.html.

=3Ddog Bow Wow to everyone! Preparations are on the wa= y for the 5^th Annual Bow Wow Brown Bag Bingo, which has been K= PETS largest annual fundraiser. This event is held Sunday, September 5^that = 7pm at Outdoor World Circle M RV Resort. A lot of work takes place = prior to the event and we need your assistance!Below are a number of items that you can assist with to make this event even more profitable for KPETS than in the past.

The Bow Wow Brown Bag Bingo (BWBBB) fund-raiser is KPETS most profitable fundraiser to dat= e, and is in the hot and heavy planning stages. For the past five years Adella Houck has led this really fun = ;event and has taken it to a record breaking $$$ generation for our ever-growing non-profit. She couldn't have done it without the help of key volunteers in previous years, but a lot of the up-front leg work was done solely by Adella. Being t= hat KPETS has more volunteers than ever before, the preparation for this event shouldn't have to fall on Adella's shoulders! Won't you please lend a "paw" in making BWBBB 2010 a success!

If each KPETS friend would simply fulfill one of the requests above, t= his event is sure to be the biggest fund-raising event ever for KP= ETS, and you can be proud knowing you had a hand/paw in securing KP= ETS financial future! 4. Special trick, talent or skill your KPETS pet has? No tricks - collies don't do tricks, however, put a child in their path and they will herd the child to safety every time. Bailey does Rally-O when we have time to compete - which ha= sn't happened since Mary Merrill died. Beamer likes to read with kids,= he gets along with all dogs as long as their "sniff" time in his face is a one time "sniff"! Beamer loves to roll-over, "say Grace", sit on a stool at the table when we eat (no paws on the table), he can "sit, stay and come" better = than most dogs; he walks on a leash. Josie has no talent other than be= ing a bit "goofy" which endears her to anyone who holds her. Rosie will offer her paw to anyone who is in need of some gentle loving. Topper can stand, stay and bow. He is great with kids - a= ll around his feet as well as crawling all over his back. All the animals are patient, gentle and kind.<= /span>

5. How long have you been a KPETS team? 4 years wi= th KPETS and 12 years with Delta Society.<= /span>

6. What's = your KPETS pet's favorite past time? Eat, sleep and be with people<= /span>

7. What's your favorite part of being a KPETS team? Doing kids' programs with my pets. <= /span>

8. What recent KPETS events have you participated = in? We just completed the 3rd annual KPETS Mystery book series. This book is titled, 21 Minutes to 2031. I truly believe this is our best book yet! The illustrations are better than in the past as well as we'= ve made chapters rather than one long story. This is also our longest book - 59 pages altogether! The kids were absolutely fantastic! We had a good time and plans are already in the making for the 4th in the mystery series for next summer! (books sell for $5)<= /span>

9. If you could trade places with your pet for a d= ay, what would you enjoy most about being him or her? If I could trade places with Beamer, I'd give him a good heart. He has a hea= rt condition that will not allow him a long "normal" lifes= pan, so if I could just for one day give him my heart, I would do that= - not that he doesn't have my "heart" anyway. That cat is= so unique - usually, you only meet an animal like that once in a lifetime - I've been blessed to have had 2 dogs, 2 cats and 2 hor= ses who were all unique and wonderful - accomplishing things well bey= ond what would ever be expected.

10. If you were a dog/cat breed, which would you be and why?

A Maine Coon cat would be my choice. Why? They are= the gentle giants of the cat world - they have the best of both the d= og and cat world. They retrieve balls and toys- my collies don't. Th= ey get along with all animals - they can be taught to "leave it= " for birds and Guinea pigs and they will. They want to be with the= ir people and never have the aloofness or attitude of other cats. Th= eir fur is as soft as bunny fur and it is long. The fur sheds seasona= lly rather than all the time, the way that short-haired cats shed. Th= ey can be walked, but don't need to walk in hot, humid or stormy and cold weather. They can be trained to do everything a dog can= do, without the size or the need for constant petting. They are your = best friend on your worst day and they'd rather travel in a car to be = with their people than to be left home.

On June 8th, we were able to attend the Barnstormer= 's mascot, Cylo's 6th birthday party. Kip (Bill) was in attendance, as well as myself and our golden boy, Poz. There were mascots from Dutch Wonderland, Hershey Park, Isaacs, Turkey Hill, even Santa was there handing o= ut candy canes!! Kip was able to join in the fun on the field with t= he other mascots and played in a game of dodge ball. (If you are fri= ends with KPETS on facebook, there is a video of the dodgeball game as well as pictures). Kip got to be on Cylo's team and they won when Cylo= took down the last mascot standing, his mom! Poz definately LOVED all = the attention he got being the only dog (besides Kip) and got the word out about KPETS. While Poz was on the field for the dodgeball game, a Barnstormer player was throwing a ball with him= and wanted to keep him in the dugout during the game! Kip did an autograph session for the kids and even got asked to sign t-shirt= s, baseball bats and balls, he's a celebrity! We definately had a gr= eat time celebrating with Cylo and the Barnstormers won 12-4 that nig= ht!!

On May 26th, six KPETS teams and one cat traipsed = to the New Oxford Elementary (NOE) School after being contacted= by literacy coach, Dr. Joan Crouse. We had been warned that this was= the largest Literacy Night yet at the school. Was it due to the pizza being offered or was it KPETS? Well, judging by the amount of kids who sat and read to the KPETS animals, we were willing to wager t= hat the turn-out was for KPETS!As one youngster so aptly put it, &quo= t;I can get pizza in school every day, but we don't get to read to do= gs and cats at all!" And so it went. Overall, including parents= , there were about 100 people in attendance. Many of the NOE staff were a= lso there to help orchestrate kids and parents. The kids were divided into threee groups- based on the color nametag they were given and assigned to rotating stations. One station was the pizza, another station was educational puzzles and games, and the final station = were the KPETS teams - all spread around the cafetorium (yes, that is spelled correctly!).

We had six dogs and Beamer, the cat. We began with a presentation= on KPETS - who we are, what we do and then followed with the KPETS DVD. Parents and kids were giving "ooooohhhs and aaahhhhhs" as each dog was introduced. Then we pulled Beamer= out of his "bag" and the kids clapped. Beamer almost said h= is "good-bye" at that point! Not realizing he was a "hit", the loud noise rebounding around the walls, well= , he got himself under control and got down to the business of listeni= ng to kids read! With Beamer, was Rosie, the rough collie and his housemate. Carol Keffer and Lucky also were there with a happy to= ngue and wagging tail. Then came Wendi Mitzel and Bristol - who has no tail, but his butt was wagging anyway! Patti Chamberlain and Pret= ty Girl did what Pretty Girl does best - laid out on the floor so li= ttle hands could pet while they wooed her to sleep as they read. Barb = Noll and Hunter were there - Hunter had a paw to give as kids sat down= to read to him. Lisa Nace and Peyton were there - this is the same district where Lisa works as a guidance counselor. So Peyton knew= his way around as did Lisa! By the way, both Peyton and Bristol had j= ust come from an hour at New Hope a group home in Hanover, so they did double the work that night!

We've already been asked back for next year - all the teams said a quick, "YES". Then there was more - would we be willing= to do the same thing at the other elementary school in this same district. That was a no-brainer, we all said another, "YES&q= uot; and there you have it! We'll be back! We all had fun, the do= gs loved all the attention - it wasn't only the kids who read also! = Some of the parents thought that to pet the animals, they also had to read, so we had some children's stories read by adults as well! T= ails were still wagging - well, not Beamer's since he is a cat! as we = all left. Kids were laughing as they walked out the door, parents were smiling and promising to read with their kids all summer, so over= all, we can say we were a tongue-licking success!

3Ddog We were very well received and the children were able to race the do= gs in Rally Agility! Everyone had a wonderful time, and the camp inform= ed us that the children were overjoyed by our visit and would be tal= king about it for days!

Currently, Chester and I visit a little girl during her half hour therapy session. T= his little girl, who shows signs of autism, helps Chester to be very brave, as she teaches him about her world. Little does she = know that "her" golden retriever is the one h= elping her to connect and respond in a deeper way to the world arou= nd her.=

Also, we visit a home that houses victims of abuse, a safe house. On our most recent visit, there was a little boy high on the stairs, so afraid of everything, including doggies. Little by little, he ventured down one step at a t= ime, finally giving Chester a treat through the stair railings. By the= end of our hour-long visit, he was walking Chester up and down the hallways while holding my hand ~~continuing to give treats of cou= rse, quiet commands, and gentle pats on the head. Ches= ter just did what Chester does best, wagged his tail and was pat= ient ~ winning over this little boy's heart with lots of golden l= ove! Oh so sweet!

KPETS has been asked to visit with the kids of the Theraputic Camp in Lancaster on 7/28 from noon-1pm. As of now, we= do not have any team signed up!! If you could please take an hour ou= t of your day to make the day of these kids brighter, that would = be wonderful!!

KPETS gets a lot of email regarding pets in need of homes or even people looking for pets. This is something we want = to help out with but with our growth it is becoming very difficult to do. But to help with this type of request, we have set up an area= on the forum that you can post and reply to these type of needs. Ple= ase check it out. And while you're there, snoop around, look at visit requests and other info. The forum could be a great tool for us, = IF people start do post and reply and visit it more frequently. Thanks!

On Friday May 28 Tonka & I spent the day at Mount H= olly Springs elementary school for their annual health fair. Alo= ng with Suzie and her pitbull Misty from the Harrisburg Humane Socie= ty we spoke to the children about Dog Safety. We talked about = how to be safe around dogs you don't know as well as how to keep your= own dog safe in the summer. We had 12 groups rotate into our ro= om as we saw a little more than 250 students.

The kids sat on the floor around the dogs during our discussions. Tonka even used a few as a pillow while he wai= ted for the talking to be over. After each discussion we had ti= me to pet both dogs. It was hard to get the students to leave = the dogs and move onto the next session. The school had other safety topics such as bicycle & helmet safety, staying hydrat= ed, healthy snacks and summer exercise.

Tonka even helped the school receptionist eat her cucumbers and carrots as a lunch snack. The principle was thrilled to hav= e us and said they would like to have KPETS back for a 'reading to the dogs program' next year.

        The Chocolatet= own Challenge

This spring KPETS was invited to participate in the Chocolatetown Challenge, held on Saturday, May 22nd on the Milton Hershey Campu= s.

The Chocolatetown Challenge is collaboration between The Hershey Company, the Penn State Milton S. Hershey Medical Center, Milton Hershey School, Hershey Trust Company, the M.S. Hershey Foundation and Hershey Entertainment & Resorts Company. The inaugu= ral Chocolatetown Challenge was held in 2008 and since then almost 4,= 000 employees and their family members from the Hershey entities have participated in a variety of events that promote physical activit= y, healthy eating, camaraderie and sportsmanship in the community.&n= bsp; This year 1,081 employees, retirees, and family members attended.

Our KPETS table was in Founder's Hall, where the Wellness Fair was being held. This was an ideal location for our teams becaus= e of the significant roll our dogs play in promoting wellness to so ma= ny people both young and old. As we hoped, the dogs were very "popular", receiving lots of "pets". We= , as the handlers, distributed brochures and answered questions about KPETS and what therapy dogs do.

At the close of the day our teams felt that it was a successful e= vent for KPETS, affording us another opportunity to inform the public = of our services. Feedback from the organizers was also positiv= e, with an assurance of wanting us to participate in next years Chocolatetown Challenge.

"Clare House, a transitional shelter for home= less women and their children, was thrilled to have a KPETS team come = for a visit on May 12th. While our moms attended an on-site life skil= ls program, the KPETS volunteers and their four-legged companions pl= ayed with the kids (whose age varied from 4 months to 8 years). Many of our children had never been around dogs before and they had a bla= st. Everyone loved spending time with the dogs, who were so patient a= nd well-behaved. The Clare House kids were able to feed them treats, took turns walking them and even watched them do special tricks! = In spite of the rainy weather, the KPETS crew was flexible and we we= re able to have the special activity take place indoors. What a phenomenal experience for Clare House and our families...we can't wait for our next visit! Thank you to KPETS and all those who make this program possible!"

Hope this finds you doing well. The HOPE Program needs a li= ttle boost right now and we could use your help. Adoptions have = been very slow over the last year and have now reached a near standstill. You can help by spreading the word about the program and the fabulous dogs who are waiting to be adopted. Please consider sending an email to your friends, family and co-workers to let them know about the program. If you've already adopted a four legged "parolee," sharing your s= tory may very well be the spark that leads to another adoption. = The dogs are terrific and every HOPE adopter gets a free training ses= sion with one of the HOPE trainers, as well as free support from the H= OPE trainers for the rest of the dog's life!!

Each dog has a journal page with entries written by the inmate handlers. Potential adopters can read about Justin teaching Casey how to play with a Frisbee, Chi Chi and Hercules showing of= f in agility class, Todd charming the staff and Cocoa's weekly field t= rips with her favorite volunteer. Adopters can look at photos and videos of each dog, as well as videos of the dogs interacting with each other. Each dog is trained in accordance with the Cani= ne Good Citizen test. The dogs have all of their basic skills = in tip-top shape when they are granted "parole" and our trainers will work closely with you to make sure those skills transfer to the dog's new life with you.

There are six dogs currently in the program and nearly twenty mor= e on the waiting list so your help is invaluable. Adoption applications are available online and the adoption fee of $225 includes a new collar and leash, training manual, training session, favorite toys, brand new toys, a letter from the inmate handlers and support from the HOPE trainers for t= he rest of the dog's life.
