Safety Tip

of the Month

As pet therapy becomes more and more recognized = and popular, you may find times that your are visiting not only with other KPETS teams, but other therapy dog organizations as well. This can make for an interesting visit. =

Some organizations do not follow the same safety= quidelines that KPETS tries to abide by. =

Just this past week, one such incident occured. A young child was running around= with her puppy while her mother was not near-by. The leash got around another dog's neck as the child continued to run. The handler of the small dog yelled for the child to stop running and then was able to free her small dog from a potentially life- threatening situation.

There is not a whole lot we can do regarding&nbs= p;
other "therapy" dogs' behaviors, but we can be proactive in watching out for our pets.

100% awareness when visiting is key. Never let your guard down or get too comfortable in a rountine pet visit. You never know what m= ay occur.

And if a situation just seems too uncomfortable, please excuse yourself tactfully. And feel free to make us awar= e of the situation, so we can hopefully prevent it from happening ag= ain.

KPETS Pups Have Local Malls Going to the Dogs!

Bon Ton again is holding their February Community Days and offering loc= al non-profits to sell their special coupon booklets that,= in turn, donates those dollars earned to the non-profit. The books sell for $5 each. BUT in them are a lot of special sales along with a coupon worth $10 to use in their store on Feb 26.

York, = Lancaster and Hanover KPETS teams who staffed the sales at local Bon= Ton stores sold coupon booklets during the November campaign and raised over $900 for KPETS. We have a few = more weeks to sell the books for the February campaign.

You can sell them to friends and family, co-workers or you can join us = in selling them at the malls. It's so much fun taking yo= ur dog to Bon Ton. The kids (and grown-ups) just love seeing the pups at the mall and the pups love the attention. It's too cold to be walking the dogs outside. What a great way to get them out of the house and help raise funds for KPETS at the same time.

New Visit Requests Now On KPETS Forum by Jenny Rule<= o:p>

To save time and labor, we will now be using the K= PETS Forum to share NEW visit requests!

It is our goal for you, and eventually facilities seeking visits, to use the forum as a way to find out about = and fulfill visit requests, as well as talk amongst yourselves about = your visits.

We've found that many of you also receive requests from people or facilities directly. Now you can add the requests you receive to the Forum on your own!

You can get to the Forum by going to www.kpet.org and choose the Konnections tab and then choose "Forum" or go to http://forum.kpet.org.

Simply click on the area of the request (i.e. York County). Select "Start New Topic". Enter the topic title and description. S<= /span>croll down and add the details of the visit in the text box as well as the contact info. Then cl= ick "Post New Topic". <= /p>

With this new method of posting visit requests, it= is important to post that you have fulfilled the request on the Foru= m by posting a Reply, as well as letting me know - so I can close the topic. We want to keep the Forum as up-to-date as possible.=

There are a lot of other great topics to share and explore on the Forum as well. With more to come!

KPETS Receives Donation from AMBUCS!<= o:p>

3Dambucs Lancaster AMBUCS

Lancaster AMBUCS presented a check for $1000 to KPETS to help us continue our mission.

Cheryl Kmiecik.= a fellow CVC member (Council for Volunteer C= oordinators) invited Karen to be the quest speaker at one of the AM= BUCS regular Monday Lunch meetings. Cheryl also gave KPETS an application for donation that we submitted.

Upon review of = our request, KPETS was invited back on Monday, February 7 at the Hamilton Club, Lancaster, to receive the funds. The check was presented to Karen and Jenny by Chick Hungerford along with AMBUCS President Fran = Krinzer.

Support from ci= vic organizations, like AMBUCS are key to KPETS' continued existence. After our first full fiscal year of an office and= 1.5 employees, KPETS is operating in the red. The generosity of AMBUC= S is greatly needed and very much appreciated!

F= IRST KPETS "Think Spring BBQ Beer Dinner"

KPETS will be holding our first Think Spring BBQ Beer Dinner Sunday, March 20 at Union Barrel Works, Reamstown, PA fro= m 3 - 6 pm. This will be a multi-course meal with a special beer to accompany each course. Don't fret if you don't drink beer, there'= s always someone willing to let you share with them. I've attended a simil= ar event and it was a great time as well as a great fund-raiser for = the organization.



There will be d= oor prizes, raffles and Chinese Auction too. So tell your friends, fa= mily or co-workers and pull together a table for eight or four to get a reduced rate from the $60 per person price. A table for 8 is $450= or a table of 4 is $230.

Sponsorship opportunities are available, too. For $400, you get a table for 4 and includes your name or your business name in the program for the course or = beer sponsored and listed on our Beer Dinner Web page, as well as a sp= ot at our PR Display Table. Or if you are unable to attend, you can = get the same sponsorship as above but without the dinner tickets= .



We are hoping this will be a great fundraiser for KPETS and will be able to do this annually. So get the gang toget= her and we'll see you there!

Bow Wow Bingo

It's hard to believe but it's time to start thinking about KPETS Bow Bow Bingo for the summer of 2011. As you all know = this has been KPETS life-blood of fund raising for the past several ye= ars. And Adella Houck has been a God-send to KPETS for running this for us. But after seven years of doing this for us and the previous organization, Adella needs to step back from the overall responsibility for this venue. That means we desperately need som= eone to jump up to the challenge to follow in her footsteps.

I will be meeting with her next week to figure out the details, but I do kn= ow we will need a lead person for the Bow Wow Brown Bag Bingo for La= bor Day Sunday as well as a coordinator for the weekly bingos that run most of the summer (4th of July thru Labor Day weekend).

Don't ge= t me wrong, she is not disappearing. She will be available to guide us, but with the travel and hours required for her career, she is not going to be available to comfortably run the Bingo world:) God love her for all she's done and she will continue to guide us= . But looks like we need another God-send!

KPETS Kanine Karnival<= /span>

Summer will be here before you know it and so will= the KPETS K9 Karnival. We learned a lot from our attempt at the event last year and we're ready to take those lessons and give it a go again this year on Sunday, June 12 at Grater Memorial P= ark, Ephrata, PA. Let's hope for cooler weather (I can't believe I'm saying that today when it's in teens as I type) than we had last = year!

We plan to kick off the event with the walk and bu= ild on it from there with vendors, games, prizes, etc. If you would like= to be a part of our planning committee, please contact Jenny at Konnections@kpets.org.

Volunteer Round Tables

Last month we mentioned the new format for our Volunteer Round Tables in Lancaster.

We will still hold them the 2nd Saturday's of odd months but the time and location have changed. Our next one will = be March 12 at 11 am in the Blair Room, right down the hall from the KPETS office - the same room as orientations.<= /p>

For this one, to make it easier, it will be a box lunch meeting. So bring your own goodie bag and drink a= nd enjoy the company of other KPETS volunteers and those working on becoming registered with KPETS.

During this lunch, we will discuss ideas and suggestions for future round tables, as well be able to mingle and chat at our leisure without the concern of disturbing others in o= ur immediate area as we did in restaurant situations.

Be sure to RSVP to Jenny so we know how many to expect. Really hope to see you there:)=

Lending Library

Last month we informed you about the new Lending Library KPETS is trying to offer and v= arious ways to help our volunteers learn more about all the different th= ings our therapy pets can be used for.

<= span style=3D'font-size:10.0pt;font-family:"Verdana","sans-serif"; color:#5C788C'>We are accumulating quite a bit of books and videos and we are working to get those listed on our KPETS forum. We will keep the list on there alon= g with who has them signed out. Books can either be picked up at the office or we can send them out to you if you'd like to cover the shipping cost.

Share the Knowledge

Once we have the Lending Library up and running and folks have had a chance to read and view some of the materials, m= aybe we can incorporate that learning with our Round Table luncheons! Something to talk about on March 12! Hope to see you there!<= /o:p>
